It’s a special night for Simone Biles as she seeks her second all-around gold in Paris — so her husband Jonathan Owens is breaking out a special pen as he keeps track of her scores and cheers her on.

Biles, 27, is competing in the women’s gymnastics all-around final on Thursday, Aug. 1, aiming to repeat the Olympic gold she won at the 2016 Rio Olympics — and come back from the 2020 Tokyo Games, when she had to withdraw from the all-around and team final due to a bout of the “twisties.”

This time, she’s the favorite for gold, and has Owens, whom she married last year, and her parents in the stands cheering her on. It was her mom, Nellie Biles, who taught the Chicago Bears safety to keep track of Biles’ scores on each apparatus through the competition, and he now dutifully takes notes.

And for the all-around, Owens pulled out a special pen — a Mona Lisa-themed one he purchased at the Louvre Museum earlier Thursday, according to his Instagram Stories.

The 29-year-old NFL player reposted a video, originally shared by Chicago Bears content producer Jasmine Baker, of him twirling the pen after his trip to the Louvre. Baker wrote on the video, “@jowens new pen for the notes tonight…Mona Lisa about to witness the 🐐.”

Biles explained Owens and Nellie’s notetaking after U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials in June.

“So my parents, since they were younger, they always have the scoresheets out there. And my mom and dad, they never used to display scores like everybody, so they would like to take the notes and scores of every athlete,” Biles said at a press conference. “And at the last meet, Jonathan saw my parents doing it. And he was like, ‘Where’d you get that? I need one of those.’ Because whenever he learns about something, he wants to really dive in.”

Owens said more about how he got into it while talking to reporters at Bears training camp last week about flying out to Paris for the Olympics.

“I can’t wait to be able to support her,” he said. “It’s the person you love most, man, and you see them out there in a position where someone could get hurt and you care. I’m just holding my breath and I have my little piece of paper right there ready, calculating everything, so I can’t wait.”

Owens also shared more about his trip to the Louvre on Instagram earlier Thursday, including a Photoshopped picture of Biles among the many works of art at the museum.

“Walked past some history in the Louvre today,” he captioned the photo, adding a laughing crying emoji and a flame emoji.
